We are the proud descendants of Sarah Jane Harrison (1839–1905), of Ante, Brunswick County, Virginia.
Our lineage extends from the six children that she raised: John Harrison, James Harrison, Benjamin Harrison, Samuel Harrison, Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Harrison-Powell-Ellis-Merritt, and Richard Harrison. Our ancestor, Sarah Jane, fondly known as Jane, and her family lived in the southern region of Virginia near the Meherrin River, where they were part of a racially integrated community of Native and African Americans. This community was rooted in mutual respect, support, and shared purpose, despite the diversity in their backgrounds and traditions. As the matriarch of the Harrison family, Sarah Jane Harrison embodied strength, resilience, and integrity. She faced the hardships of racial injustice with unwavering courage, raising her children with a deep commitment to righteousness and unity. Her children Benjamin and Sallie’s descendant families remained in Brunswick County, while the families of John, James, and Samuel descendant families settled in neighboring Greensville County.
Our first Sarah Jane Harrison Family Reunion was held in 2003, and we are proud to celebrate 23 years of gathering in her honor. At our last reunion, over 400 family members attended, and we anticipate an even greater turnout for our 2026 celebration.
Mark your calendars!
Join us for our 2026 Sarah Jane Harrison Family Reunion, taking place Juneteenth weekend

Family matters — and reunions give us the chance to celebrate our roots, connect with one another, and honor the legacy of those who came before us. Please spread the word to your immediate family, distant relatives, and family friends. Everyone is welcome as we celebrate our shared heritage. We look forward to seeing you in 2026!
